Why Alkalizing Food is Good for Us?
To keep our bodies working or get our bodies working at the most optimal level, we must have a PH level of our blood should be 7.4, or between 7.3 - 7.5. Who knew? I sure didn't! And what does it mean anyway?
A slightly alkalined constitution is healthy, which is why we need the alkalizing food. Any increase over 7.7 (too acidic) or decrease lower than 7 (not acidic enough) can be fatal. This is due to the enzymes that cause the chemical reaction, required to keep your body in as optimal a PH blood level as possible, can't function correctly when outside this alotted range. This is why we need to eat alkalizing food, so we can help maintain our optimal PH level.
One of the main ways we maintain our PH level is through our kidneys. They filter out any excessive acids and we void them through our urine.
If we consume too many acid forming foods, our kidneys can't keep up with all the acid wastes which causes acids to accumulate in our tissues.
If the acidity becomes chronic, studies show it can lead to various health issues, such as kidney stones, muscle reduction, possible gout, or bone density reduced. There is also a possible link to arthritis, diabetes and cancer.
My body is very acidic. And I've had cancer, numerous UTIs and bladder/kidney infections, as well as osteoarthritis....and man it hurts! No one mentioned that I needed to eat more alkalizing food to help reduce the acidity. They said I needed to eat healthy with lots of greens, but didn't explain why or how, since my body was so out of whack as it was.
So we can regain the balance of our PH levels by reducing the intake of highly acidic foods like meat, refined grains, cheese, coffee, etc, and increase our intake of more alkalizing food into our diets. We should completely avoid sodas, sweetened beverages, and artificial sweeteners as well.
Eating more alkalizing food is very good for our bodies, it reduces the acidity we don't need and especially we don't need the excess going into our tissues causing the various healthy concerns.
It's recommended that 80% of our diet should be made up of alkalizing food. The other 20% can be acid forming foods or better yet neutral foods.
If possible, always choose fresh organic foods. Organic foods have a higher nutritional content and getting enough of these minerals help your body neutralize acid wastes.
Vegetables: All vegetables are alkalizing, just to various degrees. When eating more vegetables, you will help alkaine your diet.
Eating vegetables raw is the best way to get the most nutritional value out of your alkalizing food.
High Alkalizing Vegetables
- Asparagus, artichokes, arugula, onions, celery, chicory, chives, collards, comfrey, dandelion greens, eggplant, kohlrabi, parsnips, endive, winter squash, sweet potato (yams), fennel, ginger, green beans, jicama, leeks, lettuce, lima beans, lotus root, tara root, parsley, peas, pumpkin, rhubarb, rutabaga, turnips, sorrel, soy beans (edamine), soy nuts, tomatoes, tomatillos, wasabi
- Kale, spinach, parsley, swiss chard, beet greens, wheat grass & juice, barley grass, kamut grass, mustard greens and watercress are also good alkalizing food
- All types of seaweed, sea vegetables
- Sprouted beans-grains-seeds in all varieties
Medium Alkalizing Vegetables
- Beets, summer squash, potato (baked), zucchini, bell peppers, okra, broccoli, cabbage, cabbage lettuce, string beans, radishes, cilantro, basil, garlic
Low Alkalizing Vegetables
- Snow Peas, carrots, cucumber, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, mushrooms
Just to note, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and brussel sprouts also have isothiocyanates which is known as a cancer preventative.
Fruits: As per the vegetables, its best to eat your fruits raw. This is best because cooking can break down some of the vitamins. Fresh fruit juice and smoothies are great too!
Apple cider vinegar is very alkalizing, even though vinegar is very acidic.
Whether a food is alkalizing or acidifying is based on the amount of acid waste produced when digested. Your body is affected by this waste, not the actual acidity of the food, so if you are eating enough alkalizing food, it should break down the acidity appropriately.

- Almonds, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds
- Processed nut & seed oils are considered low/neutral alkalizing food, so eat these sparingly.
This includes the following oils:
- almond, sunflower, canola, sesame, olive, flax, coconut, avocado, cod liver, ghee
Any oil can go rancid fairly quickly so buy fresh, cold-pressed and untreated oils in a dark bottle, and use within 6 months.
Grains & Beans: Amaranth, millet & quinoa, as well as organic oatmeal and wild rice are naturally alkalizing food. Fresh beans, such as lima beans, yellow beans, green beans, peas are also a good form of alkalizing food.
The rest of the grains & beans are in the acidic category, including breads, cereals, pastas and any other processed grains or beans.
However, if whole grains & beans are soaked and sprouted before consumption, they too become an alkalizing food.

Acidity is caused by the overproduction of stomach acids. The hydrochloric acid secreted by the stomach glands is essential for the digestion of proteins from the food but its passage back into the esophagus, known as acid reflux, causes heartburn. Stomach acids mixed with the food that passes into the intestine normally gets neutralized by the sodium bicarbonate secreted by the pancreas in the first part of the intestine called duodenum. Recipes & Suggestions
Boil a cup of water and let it cool, adding a tsp of honey and a 1/2 a lemon squeezed of all juices. Drink this first thing in the morning, preferably, or any time of the day.
It may contain citric acid but once the body works its magic on it, the high mineral content makes this a very high alkalizing food.
Apple Cider Vinegar Shot
1 tsp of raw unfiltered ACV with a 1/2 tsp of honey and 2 oz of purified water downed quickly followed by a glass of water or juice helps alkalize your body.
If you want to increase, you can take 1 tbsp of raw unfiltered ACV with 1 tsp of honey in an 8 oz glass of water. You can take up to a maximum of 3, one prior to each meal.
However you should not take raw unfiltered ACV straight or it will burn your esophagus.
Alkaline Herbal Water
Infuse a 1/2 lemon, sliced, with a 1/2 cucumber, sliced, a slice of ginger and a bay leaf in a jug of water overnight in the fridge. Drink 1 glass every morning preferably.
